2009 Finalists Chosen for Prestigious Bart Starr Award

Tampa, FL (PressExposure) January 13, 2009 -- Athletes in Action today announced the three finalists for the 2009 Bart Starr Award, which honors one NFL player for exemplary character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

Warrick Dunn, running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, formed the Warrick Dunn Foundation, which provides opportunities for economically disadvantaged single parents and children through programs such as Homes for the Holidays. He also donates time and resources to Athletes for Hope, Boy Scouts and Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Kurt Warner, quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, founded the First Things First Foundation to promote Christian values and help bless the lives of the less fortunate. He also donates time and resources to charitable initiatives such as Make-A-Wish, Warm-Up Winter Coat Drive, Packages from Home, Special Olympics, Baskets of Hope, Mission: Possible! Scholarship Program, Neighborhood Ministries, Sunshine Acres and Warner’s Corners.

Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, established the Brees Dream Foundation to provide care, education and opportunities for children facing adversity. He also devotes time and resources to the Pro Sports Team Challenge, Operation Kids, Hurricane Katrina Recovery and Brees on the Seas. He was also the 2007 Bacchus Grand Marshal.

The winner of the Bart Starr Award will be announced during the 22nd annual NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, hosted by Athletes in Action, on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. EST at the USF Sun Dome. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-866-448-7849.

The 2009 breakfast program features NFL athletes and coaches, including Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy, NFL Hall of Famers Bart Starr and Anthony Munoz, Tampa Bay Buccaneer Derrick Brooks and former San Francisco 49er Brent Jones as emcee.

The recipient of the Bart Starr Award is determined by NFL player balloting at the end of the regular season, making the award one of only two individual honors selected by the players themselves. The Bart Starr award reflects Starr’s lifelong commitment to serving as a positive role model to his family, teammates and community. Past winners of the award include LaDainian Tomlinson, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Reggie White, Mike Singletary, Cris Carter, Aeneas Williams and Curtis Martin.
