Dehradun, Uttrakhand India (PressExposure) June 02, 2011 -- Hon'ble Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Chief Minister, State of Uttarakhand and Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Hon'ble Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, GoI grace the occasion.
The 8th Convocation of the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) was held in a stately ceremony at its campus. Degrees were awarded to post graduate students and undergraduate students on successful completion of their academic program. PhDs were also awarded to doctoral candidates.
A total of 980 students across various disciplines were awarded with Graduate (420 nos.) and Post Graduate (560 nos.) Degrees. UPES awards 'University Gold Medals' to it meritorious students; this year the medal recipients included : Mr Vishal Goyal as Best PG Student, College of Management & Economic Studies (CoMES), Mr Ajith K Chandy as Best PG Student , College of Engineering Studies (CoES), Ms Paridhi Gupta as Best UG Student, CoMES and Ms Alice Deepika Prasad, Best UG Student, CoES. The University also awards Silver Medals, Institutional Medals and the Cairn - Laureate Student Scholarship to deserving students.
UPES awarded a Honoris Causa Degree of Philosophy to Shri Krishnamurthi Venkatramanan and PhD Degrees to 3 other doctoral candidates. The University also confers Executive MBAs Degree to working professionals under its Centre for Continuing Education. This year there were 17 professionals who received their Degree.
The Chief Guest Hon'ble Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Chief Minister, State of Uttarakhand and the Distinguished Guest of Honour of National Eminence Hon'ble Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India graced the occasion with their presence. Distinguished guests including senior government officials, leading industrialists, renowned academicians and members of UPES staff & faculty were present. Also gracing the occasion were parents of the graduating students.
Expressing pleasure to be present at the Convocation, Shri Jaipal Reddy, in his Address said, "This University is playing a critical role in the country's economic development by providing industry-ready professionals for the country's booming energy sector". He added, "To keep pace with the demands of a dynamic business environment, the University has joined hands with the global IT giant, IBM. Such academia-industry collaboration augurs well for the advancement of technical education in the country".
Pleased to note the setting up of a Management Development Centre (MDC) by the University, the Hn'ble Minister said, "The MDC will engender the latest management and corporate practices among the high-quality technical personnel coming out of the University". He also said that UPES over the years has evolved into an institution of repute, boldly rising to meet the challenge of providing skilled human resources for the country's rapidly expanding energy sector.
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Chief Minister, State of Uttarakhand in his Address stated, "I am impressed with the rapid growth UPES has undergone in a very short span of time. The challenge for the students studying in this unique University would be to imbibe and be different in their skills from students of other regular Universities". He also added, "There is a lot which is disintegrating in the world today and the challenge is to assimilate and build on it for the future". He congratulated the students on their achievement and hoped that the talent produced from UPES would contribute significantly in the R&D field, particularly in search for alternative and newer sources of Energy.
Delivering his Report at the 8th Convocation, the Vice Chancellor, Dr Parag Diwan, stated that, "The previous year had seen UPES mature and taken tremendous steps to move on to the next level of excellence." To complement the rapid growth of the University there has been a tremendous expansion of its campus. Today, the fully wi - fi UPES campus comprises of a total built-up area of over 6,00,000 ft. replete with dedicated academic blocks equipped with smart classrooms, miniplexes and auditoriums; state - of - the - art research laboratories, well stocked libraries and IT Centre.
The establishment of the Management Centre Development (MDC) outfitted with latest training and residential facilities. The MDC strives to be among the best training institutes in the country.
UPES in collaboration with IBM introduce four B Tech programs in Computer Science with specialization in - Cloud Computing & Virtualization Technology, Mainframe Technology, Oil & Gas Informatics and Open Source Software & Open Standards.
The Placement activity for 2010 Batch saw close to 170 national & international companies visit the campus. 70% of total students across various programs recruited.
Two key aspects of UPES stated vision are R&D and consultancy support for the Energy Transportation and Infrastructure sectors. On the funded research front, UPES undertook 10 projects across various sectors and generated revenue to the tune of Rs. 2.6 crores in the last FY. Projects already allotted for this financial year amount to Rs. 12.6 crores, with additional Rs. 8 crores in the pipeline.
