Denver, CO (PressExposure) March 22, 2010 -- A cyst in the ovary is not always a surgical or medical emergency. In fact, cysts happen to most women at one point in their live, usually during their child-bearing years. Most often, the cyst ruptures on its own, and this is known as the functional or follicular cyst. A doctor may even see the cyst during the regular check up but if the cyst disappears within months, then there is no cause for alarm.

A cyst is an unusual growth that could or could not be serious. The most serious kind of cyst would be one that contains solid tissue inside. It is this tissue that will need to be tested, should there be any, for cancerous cells.

Before any kind of ovarian cyst treatment is prescribed, a doctor must first find out whether it is a cyst with solid tissue or not. Aside from a physical examination, the doctor could request an ultrasound, a biopsy wherein a part of the cyst is removed and forwarded to a lab for testing.

Once the cyst if found to be no risk, there is no need for a specific ovarian cyst treatment unless it becomes bothersome or painful. If the growth is found to be of some risk to the patient, the doctor will recommend any of the following cyst treatments:

Observation

The doctor could decide to be conservative and play a “wait and see” attitude to find out if there will be any changes in the growth. Sometimes, the cyst can just reduce in size, and even if there is something inside the cyst, it could just be blood. Should this be the case, then the cyst will rupture on its own, and the blood will be released naturally through the monthly menstruation.

Surgery

Suppose the cyst continues to grow or not rupture, then it is possible that the doctor would want to remove the cyst as soon as possible. At this point, the main concern of the doctor is that the contents of the cyst could be cancerous and the potential for the cancerous cells to spread grows steadily.

One kind of minor surgery would be the Laparascopy which removes the tumor. Another procedure that could be done is known as the Open Laparatomy which is an incision or surgical cut along the bikini line.

Blood Test

Suppose the contents reveal that blood is inside the cyst, the doctor would need a blood test to diagnose the blood for cancer cells. This test is called the CA-125.

Aside from the different ovarian cyst treatments a woman can choose from, it is important for the woman and the doctor to factor in other aspects like age, results from the ultrasound, and the size of the cyst.
