One in four women experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime. Three women are killed by their significant others every day in the United States alone. The statistics are frightening and, although society has come a long way in breaking decades of silence about domestic violence, there is a pressing need for greater awareness of crimes against abuse victims, and Leap Books wants to help.
In conjunction with the TellNOW initiative supported by Glamour magazine and the Avon Foundation for Women, Leap Books will be donating 20% of all sales from its new release, For the Love of Strangers, to support the 2011 Domestic Violence Awareness Project. Written by award-winning author Jacqueline Horsfall, For the Love of Strangers is a thrilling tale about 16-year-old Darya and her family's efforts to shelter victims of domestic abuse. Horsfall worked for years as the director of a women's center and a county crisis referral center. The female characters in her stories mirror the trials of real women in real situations.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Leap Books is striving to end domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is in danger, please call 911 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Leap Books is also offering free copies of For the Love of Strangers to area shelters along with a booklist of resources for teens and a copy of "Libby's Lament," a frameable poem about life through the eyes of a domestic violence victim. Requests for free materials or more information may be sent to info@leapbks.com. ###
