Calgary, Alberta Canada (PressExposure) November 22, 2011 -- Southern Alberta BBB warns consumers of a rise in furnace cleaning scams and how to avoid them.
As colder, winter weather sets in again and homeowners scramble to get their furnaces in order, the Better Business Bureau warns of a spike in complaints and urges consumers to choose service providers wisely to avoid unnecessary expenses.
The need to have furnaces in top shape before the coldest weather rolls in should not be underestimated. However, the Southern Alberta BBB is sounding the alarm due to receiving more complaints so far this year than all of last year.
In a recent interview Sandra Crozier-McKee, BBB president and Oksana Irwin of Western Canadian Furnace Company highlighted some of the most common scams and rip offs they are seeing in the province. It seems some contractors are capitalizing on the sense of urgency felt by homeowners as winter creeps up on them, often pushing services that aren't really needed. Other unscrupulous companies have even reportedly gone as far as far as sabotage in order to up-sell and insist on more extensive work needing to be done.
So what can homeowners do to protect themselves and avoid overpaying for this essential service? Making sure that any furnace company consumers consider working with uses certified gas fitters and provides warranties for parts and labour is critical. The Better Business Bureau also recommends always getting a second opinion and at least two quotes to keep contractors honest and to make sure homeowners are getting a fair deal. Of course requesting references and Googling furnace companies to see what others are saying about them are smart moves too.
However, Oksana Irwin's passion for the industry and desire to see that all homeowners are treated fairly has lead her to publish the new ebook 'Consumer's Guide to Furnace Cleaning', which is now available for free download. In this guide consumers will discover the 5 most costly misconceptions about furnace cleaning, why furnace cleaning is so important to maintaining a healthy home, how to avoid the top 3 furnace cleaning rip-offs and 5 mistakes to avoid when choosing a furnace cleaning company.
