Blessing Blessed With A Walk Full Of Life At Moolchand

New Delhi, India (PressExposure) October 18, 2011 -- A rare surgery on a 66 year old Nigerian lady Blessing Nelson Udoh, who was unable to walk due to advanced crippling arthritis and severely bent crooked knees, underwent bilateral Total Knee Replacement surgery at Moolchand Orthopaedics Hospital, New Delhi in September 2011. On path to strive for world class facility to its patients, Moolchand has touched another milestone by using novice technique of bloodless bilateral complex knee replacement surgery which is first of its kind in India.

Generally, knee replacement surgery integrally requires blood transfusions of two units per knee. The requirement of blood during such procedures is a surgical workup prerequisite.

At Moolchand, we provide world-class quality standards and respect everyone's beliefs as well. Blessing is a Jehovah's Witness, a Christian section who seeks out quality healthcare and accepts the vast majority of medical treatments. However, for Bible-based religious reasons, Jehovah's Witnesses do not accept blood transfusion of any kind other than their own blood. She had low pre operative hemoglobin of 8. This was a technical challenge given that her knee replacement surgeries were of complex nature.

"An auto transfusion knee drain technique has been used in this case, wherein patient's blood get collected in a filtered reservoir connected to the replaced knee. This blood is then transfused back to the patient within six hours. This obviates the need for any blood transfusion thus minimizing the risks associated with it. Moreover, the patient is very happy and thankful as despite being a high risk with the complicated nature of operation, she is now walking on her own straight legs" says Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Consultant, Joint Replacement, Moolchand Orthopedics Hospital who has carried on this complex bilateral knee replacement surgery with a bloodless technique.
