Victoria Road, United Kingdom (PressExposure) July 05, 2011 -- British Gas is currently running a one month offer for people who are looking to trade in their old boiler for a more energy efficient model. This limited time offer will provide anyone who qualifies to take part with a £400 discount on their new boiler.
The offer which begins as of the 30th May will run throughout June and will reward people who wish to apply to its scrappage scheme with £400 off a newer more energy efficient model.
The scheme will provide anyone who has a G-rated boiler with the opportunity to take advantage of the offer. British Gas will send an engineer to the property to ensure the home is suitable for a new A-rated boiler.
The energy efficiency of boilers has greatly improved over the last 40 years. A boiler installed in the 1990s is 20% more efficient than one which was installed in the 1970s. By upgrading your boiler from a low G-rated to an A-rated boiler can reduce a household's CO2 emissions by over a tonne a year.
If the boiler in your home has not been replaced for some years then you probably own a G-rated boiler. A quick way to verify if your boiler is G-rated is to see if it has a pilot light that burns continuously.
If your boiler is gas powered and more than 15 years old or is oil fired and more than 20 years old it will more than likely qualify for the scheme. British Gas said around 3.5m boilers in the UK could qualify. By taking advantage of this offer and getting a more energy efficient A-rated condensing boiler this can save the average household over £100 a year in heating costs.
If you feel it is time to upgrade your G-rated boiler through this scheme you will get a £400 discount off the new boiler. This could be as much as 20% off as a Worcester Bosch boiler which is part of this offer can cost around £2000 including the installation.
By installing a modern energy efficient boiler your home will require less fuel and should lower your families energy bills. It is estimated however to take around eight years before the average energy user will see a financial return on the full price of an 'A-rated' boiler. For this reason some people question the money-saving claims made on behalf of modern condensing boilers.
Nevertheless there is no doubt new boilers reduce energy consumption which is better for the environment.
The current British Gas offer is similar to the government boiler scrappage scheme which ran in January 2010. That scheme also offered a £400 discount but was limited to just 125,000. If you are not a British Gas customer and don't currently own a British Gas boiler do not worry as this is not a requirement for the offer and you do not have to sign up to any other service contract or energy tariff to get the deal.
