  22. Today, PD Ports (PDP) announced the signing of a 15-year lease with subsea cable manufacturer, JDR Cables Ltd. This new agreement will see JDR, who provide umbilical and cable systems for the offshore oil & gas and wind farm sectors operate from a 100,000 sq ft factory, located on the deep water berth at Hartlepool Dock. An existing PDP warehouse at Hartlepool will be converted into a state of the art umbilical cable manufacturing facility and will employ up to 80 new staff.

  34. PD Ports has been raising its profile in the Far East as part of an awareness campaign to attract deep sea vessels to call direct to Teesport on the North East coast of England. This follows the recent UK Government approval for PD Ports to build a deep sea container terminal known as the Northern Gateway Container Terminal (NGCT) at Teesport, which will create over 5,500 new jobs and a terminal capable of handling 1.5m teu (twenty foot equivalent units) of containers per annum when fully built.

(MOL, President: Akimitsu Ashida) today announced that the MOL-operated iron ore carrier Brasil Maru was selected as the Ship of The Year for 2007 by The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers. The selection committee noted that the Brasil Maru is a pioneering vessel in reducing iron ore transport cost which will have a great effect on steel production. Adoption of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) welding technologies increases resistance to metal fatigue. In addition, 2008 marks the centennial anniversary of Japanese emigration to Brazil, and the vessel is the third generation to carry the Brasil Maru name, following two cargo and passenger liners. The new Brasil Maru is a historical vessel worthy of the centennial anniversary.
