Choosing a Wedding Ring Aside From The Style

Essex, Florida (PressExposure) June 12, 2009 -- One of the most important detail that marrying couples should look at when choosing a wedding ring is its durability. More often, style is what marrying couples are mainly looking for in a wedding ring. Diamond draped silvery-white wedding rings or those with engravings are some of the most popular types of wedding rings that couples are opting to have. But aside from the style, its also important to note that durability and the materials used for the wedding ring are also essential for the ring to last as long as their relationship. So what are the popular materials used for wedding rings today? And which of these materials can provide the durability which every marrying couples need?

In the past, couples did not have any other choices to choose from. They could only have one type of wedding ring - gold. Today, marrying couples are offered wider collections of wedding rings from traditional gold wedding rings to newly introduced tungsten rings. Wedding ring collections today include:

Gold Wedding Rings. Traditional type of wedding rings are made from gold. They are known for their long lasting luster and their durability. Common gold wedding rings available today range from 14k gold wedding rings and 18k gold wedding rings. However, one known disadvantage of gold wedding rings is that they're known to cause skin irritation, mainly due to the nickel component used in the mixture. Platinum Wedding Rings. These rings are popular because of their luxurious silvery-white color and luster. They're also known for durability that surpasses gold which is why they are more expensive than gold. Because skin irritation or allergies result from combining nickel with platinum, some jewelers are offering platinum wedding rings with palladium instead of nickel. These newer models, as can be expected, are more expensive than traditional platinum rings.

White Gold Wedding Rings. These rings are produced by combining gold and a single white element (rhodium or palladium). They are very popular to marrying couples because they closely resemble platinum wedding rings with a lower price tag (although some are generally more expensive than traditional gold wedding rings). However, because white gold is less resilient than platinum, one known disadvantage of white gold rings is their lack of resistance to scratches. Some could also cause skin irritation because of nickel.

Tungsten Wedding Rings. Newly introduces into the market, tungsten rings are known for their durability (more durable than platinum). Bulky and metallic gray in nature, tungsten rings are commonly used as wedding rings for men. Also, because tungsten is known for its hypoallergenic composition, rings made from tungsten are perfect for people with sensitive skin. On top of all these tungsten rings do not need polishing, which makes them especially useful in designs with a brushed finish.
