London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) November 09, 2009 -- The makers of a new green coffee that contains a blend of unroasted coffee and roasted Arabica beans claim it could help users lose 4.45lb in a month without any other dietary changes, writes Anastasia Stephens.
Drunk every morning before breakfast, each 3g sachet of Coffee Shape contains six to ten per cent of chlorogenic acid, a natural plant compound in green coffee that acts as a slimming and health promoting substance [http://www.coffeeshape.co.uk].
In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that chlorogenic acid from green coffee causes significant levels of weight loss. They also discovered how it works â by reducing sugar absorption from the gut and speeding up the rate at which fat is burned in the body.
In a four-week trial assessing Coffee Shape, those who drank one cup a day lost 3.5lb in two weeks, and 4.45lb in a month. That compares to drinkers of standard coffee, who on average lose just 0.3lb in two weeks compared to those who drink no coffee at all.
âGreen coffee [http://www.coffeeshape.co.uk] is similar to green tea. In its raw, unroasted form, it is rich in plant molecules that speed metabolism and aid weight loss,â says Laurent Fresnel, of ATP Life, makers of Coffee Shape. âThese molecules of chlorogenic acid are strong antioxidants that appear to have other health benefits too. Unfortunately, they are destroyed in the roasting process, so are not found in high levels in regular coffee.â
Early research suggests the other health benefits of chlorogenic acid and green coffee may be substantial. In a study published in Diabetes Care, chlorogenic acid was found to reduce blood sugar levels while increasing sensitivity to insulin, significantly reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Despite its potential, Dr David Ashton, of the Healthier Weight centres, says: âThis may help people lose weight while drinking it but the only way to keep weight off in the long run is through a healthy diet and high activity levels to burn off calories.â
Nescafe has also brought out a blend of green and roasted instant coffee (£2.98 from major supermarkets) that it says is naturally rich in âhealth-supporting antioxidants.â
