Williamsburg, VA (PressExposure) July 30, 2009 -- Every 70 seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with Alzheimerâs disease. This staggering figure, released by the Alzheimerâs Association, is one of the many reasons why residents of Lennarâs active adult community, Colonial Heritage united to form a support group that raises awareness for the disease and for those helping people who are suffering from it.
Sponsored by the Alzheimerâs Association and led by Colonial Heritage residents Joan Bender, a retired nurse and Mary Brett Wright a retired nurse, psychologist and geriatric social worker, the Caregivers Support Group was initiated to provide support to a growing number of people who are caring for friends or loved ones with Alzheimerâs.
âThe Caregivers Support Group was started because there is nothing like this in the area,â said Mary Brett Wright. âMany people donât realize that Alzheimerâs not only deeply effects the person suffering from it, but that the effect the disease has on the caregiver is equally profound.â
According to Wright, often times caregivers are so involved with helping their loved one that taking care of themselves becomes obsolete.
âIt is so important that Alzheimer caregivers have an outlet to share their emotions and a place to get information. If not, they can become overwhelmed and suffer from denial, anxiety, depression, irritability and anger,â Wright said.
âThe purpose and goal of the Caregivers Support Group is to provide support to caregivers which includes education, networking, communication and confidentiality in a trusting environment.â
The group offers an opportunity to meet regularly for mutual emotional support and to exchange ideas about coping skills in matters relating to Alzheimerâs disease. The group also provides educational seminars led by medical professionals.
The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Colonial Heritage clubhouse in Williamsburg. The Caregivers Support Group is open to anyone inside or outside the community who wishes to attend.
