Littleton, Colorado (PressExposure) October 29, 2009 -- Colorado workersâ compensation insurer of last resort Pinnacol Assurance has recently come under intense scrutiny, prompting the Pinnacol Interim Committee to recommend several bills to the full Colorado General Assembly to reform the quasi-governmental insurer. Colorado workersâ compensation attorneys at the Babcock Law Firm (http://www.injurylawcolorado.com/) support any and all efforts that reinforce the original idea of a no fault system for workers injured on-the-job and applaud the committeeâs work thus far.
Over the last several weeks, the committee has heard testimony from employers, employees, doctors and the insurance provider themselves regarding the companyâs compensation practices and how they handle on-the-job injury claims. Last Friday, the committee voted on several bills that aim to reduce rates for employers, bring transparency and accountability, end the companyâs practice of offering bonuses to deny claims, diversify Pinnacolâs board of directors and enact a Workersâ Bill of Rights.
âDespite their best efforts, claims are not always handled properly at Pinnacol so Iâm glad the Colorado General Assembly, who has the power to influence their operations, is finally taking notice,â explains Colorado workersâ compensation attorney R. Mack Babcock. âBut itâs also unfortunate the General Assembly has to get involved. Injured workers shouldnât have to enlist the services of a workersâ comp. attorney like myself to get the help they need as this goes against the original idea of workersâ compensation and a no fault system.â
Pinnacol Assurance is the largest provider of workersâ compensation insurance in Colorado, insuring 57 percent of the market and covering 55,000 businesses and 1.5 million employees. The Interim Committeeâs recommendations now go to the full Executive Committee for approval.
