Raliegh, North Carolina (PressExposure) May 15, 2007 -- Research Triangle Park, North Carolina â CopperRoad Corporation recently introduced the PowerHub⢠suite of utility energy management products aimed at giving electric utilities the capability to remotely monitor, control, and manage residential energy usage.
The PowerHub system is composed of four hardware components; an Internet gateway connected to the electric meter, energy load controller that connects to the home appliance being managed, a thermostat, and the heat and air control module for collecting power usage data. The system allows for remote management of appliances through a web portal connected to the Internet gateway at the electric meter and is designed to respond to energy price changes automatically, while recording real time energy usage.
Remotely managing energy usage and managing home temperature functions real time are new features to utility energy efficiency programs and provides information not previously available. Reggie Bruce, President and CEO stated, âThe product will be of tremendous value to electric utilities seeking to enhance or develop residential Direct Load Control programsâ.
Many utilities offer their residential customers incentives to enroll in whatâs called âDirect Load Controlâ programs. Through these programs, customers allow their utility to directly control their central air conditioner, water heater, or other types of major electrical appliances. Utilities cycle the appliance on and off during peak demand periods, usually in alternating 15 minute cycles. For customers participating in Direct Load Control programs, utilities often offer rewards in the form of some type of credit on their utility bills. With the PowerHub, utilities could also potentially offer low-cost high-speed Internet access to their customers as an incentive for enrolling in energy efficiency programs. CopperRoad has successfully completed field trials using cable broadband, Wireless, and Broadband over Power Line as ways of delivering high-speed Internet service to the home.
âAs most people know, energy consumption in all forms has become a real hot-button issue,â says Reggie Bruce, âAt CopperRoad, weâve worked hard to develop alternatives that reduce energy usage. Our PowerHub product empowers people to have a controlling role in managing their own energy usage,â Bruce says.
Customers can use their computer to locally monitor and control their major appliances through a secured link to the Internet gateway connected to the electric meter. The addition of recording power usage and temperature information through an Internet-based energy management system provides for an innovative solution to the deficiencies of existing systems.
âWith the PowerHubâ¢, many utilities will now be able to implement customer friendly intelligent energy efficiency programs and save millions of dollars in operation fees,â states Reggie Bruce.
