Corporate Success Demands Effective Utilization of the Team and the Stars

Stockton, CA (PressExposure) March 24, 2010 -- The star performer and the star employee may not be the same. Obviously, you want an employee who is quick to understand the current issues and is able to weigh the best approaches to be used. That goes without saying, but there are some other issues that need to be considered as well.

In most instances. your staff needs to work together to accomplish company or departmental goals. According to the authors of the Harvard Business School Study, “Competent Jerks,” many employees will avoid those individuals who may be highly skilled but are also unpleasant, who believe that their own ideas and concepts are the best ones. Those in management need to truly "see" the impact of personalities upon the success or failure of their staffs. When outstanding talent and outstanding teamwork come together, the success is often beyond all expectations, and it is not unusual for management to think that the "star" is the key component of the mix. That may or may not be true, and it is imperative that those in decision making positions take a good look at the employee mix to make certain that it blends in such a way that it enhances overall productivity and ensures that the end result is not only good but great.

It is as important to remember that no matter how talented someone is if his/her reactions or behaviors are detrimental to the team, the actions taken, and the attempts to hold them accountable doesn’t work, then managers need to recognize this and take the appropriate actions. As you build your teams you need to remember some key points: 1. Great ideas won't ensure success unless they are developed and expanded in logical, effective, and workable action plans. 2. Companies need opportunities for both stars and teams to shine and be recognized for their contributions. Those companies that give great rewards to their sales staff and forget about those who provide the foundation for that staff, may well discourage future support. Remember, just as it is true that it "takes a village to raise a child," it takes a well-knit team to create success.
