Santa Barbara, CA (PressExposure) January 24, 2009 -- Cospheric LLC, a microtechnology company based in Santa Barbara, CA, announced a line of opaque polyethylene microspheres available in a variety of colors and sizes. This is a breakthrough product that acts as a superior opacifying agent and provides maximum hiding power with just a monolayer of microspheres as small as 40 micron in diameter. Opaque microspheres provide a solution to paints, coatings, personal care, cosmetics and biotechnology industries.
Opaque microspheres are made from low molecular weight polyethylene, also known as polyethylene wax. The wax is pigmented up to 40% by weight to achieve the exact color and opacity level desired by the customer. The spheres are available in particle sizes from 10-500 micron and are supplied as a dry powder that can be easily mixed into paints, adhesives, creams, lotions, and oils. Just like Cospheric's clear grades of polyethylene microspheres, opaque grades are inert in most solvents and have a sharp melting point at 114C -120C depending on the molecular weight of the material used.
White opaque microspheres are a standard product and available in stock. Red, yellow, blue, green or custom colors are made to match customer's specifications. Opaque black microspheres can be formulated to have magnetic properties. All of Cospheric microspheres can be functionalized with microcoatings that combine color and electrical or magnetic properties.
"While sourcing materials for one of our projects, we searched the globe for microspheres that were truly opaque in a monolayer arrangement. We found a handful of companies that sent us samples, but under the microscope we saw poor opacity, dust, debris, and non-spherical particles. Frustrated with the lack of opaque microspheres on the market, we developed our own proprietary process to produce polymer microspheres with tightly controlled particle size, opacity, color, sphericity, as well as internal and surface charge and magnetic properties," says Brian Gobrogge, CEO and co-founder of Cospheric.
Cospheric offers fast turn-around and competitive pricing on small runs to speed up product development and shorten time to market and works with each individual customer to meet their needs. They have in-house manufacturing capability for large volume requests.
