Toronto, (PressExposure) November 15, 2011 -- For the second time, Daniels Sharpsmart Canada Ltd. received a Gold Award for its sustainable products in this year's Ontario Waste Minimization Awards sponsored by the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO). Along with other businesses and facilities, Daniels Sharpsmart helped Ontario to achieve its 60 percent waste reduction goal with its environmentally friendly Sharpsmart system of reusable sharps containers.
The Ontario Waste Minimization Awards program provides an opportunity to recognize businesses and institutions with leading environmental practices and initiatives. This year's program included six different categories with a focus on reduction results, innovations and communications. Some of Ontario's largest retail centers, office towers, healthcare institutions and commercial properties were recognized in this year's program.
"The selection criteria for the award, which recognizes excellence and commitment to a sustainable environment, were significantly tougher this year," said Ian Jennings, Manager of Daniels Sharpsmart Canada Ltd. "We're honored to receive this award for the second time in three years. This award reflects our ongoing commitment to help improve safety and ecology in healthcare."
Founded in 1996, Daniels was the first company worldwide to provide a fully integrated reusable sharps disposal system designed to provide sanitized, safer and tamper-resistant containers to cost-effectively replace disposable sharps containers.
Although initially intended to reduce the incidence of sharps injury to healthcare workers, the Sharpsmart system was also designed with the environment in mind. Sharpsmart containers have achieved significant reductions in sharps injuries in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. In addition, the system has been shown in numerous studies to significantly help with reducing facilities' carbon footprint by reducing waste volumes and greenhouse gases.
