Dural, Australia (PressExposure) March 06, 2011 -- Following a global search by BSP, Richard Ryan, the Chair of the Adelaide Festival Board today announced David Sefton as the Artistic Director of the Festival starting in 2013 - with the first annual festival - and continuing with 2014 & 15.
David comes to Adelaide from Los Angeles, where he was Executive & Artistic Director of UCLA Live, the Performing Arts program of the University of California in LA.
"We are delighted to announce the appointment of David Sefton as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival from 2013," said Richard Ryan.
"David brings a wealth of experience and a dynamic curatorial approach which he has showcased at major performing arts venues in Los Angeles and London," he said.
David's creative role at UCLA Live was particularly known and celebrated for the creation of a major international theatre festival in amongst the international year-round season of dance, music and spoken word - an award-winning roster of artists which included Pina Bausch, Robert Wilson, Charlie Kaufman, Sir Ian McKellen and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Aphex Twin, John Cleese, Brian Wilson, Edward Albee, Ben Harper and Romeo Castellucci amongst some 400 artists presented during his time there.
Prior to LA, David was the Head of Contemporary Culture at the Royal Festival Hall on London's South Bank.
In this role he created, developed and produced the centre's annual MELTDOWN Festival - started in 1993 and directed over the years by major artists such as Elvis Costello, Laurie Anderson, John Peel, Scott Walker and Nick Cave - and featuring original performances by Jeff Buckley, Nina Simone, Radiohead, Billie Whitelaw, Alain Platel, John Cale and Phillip Glass.

"At the heart of my artistic philosophy has always been the importance of creating festivals with strong identities and I will continue and extend that philosophy here.
"My family and I are very much looking forward to moving to Adelaide," he said.
Commenting on his appointment to the Adelaide Festival, past collaborator Mikhail Baryshnikov said, "I have worked with many producers and promoters around the world and David is at the top of my list. It is a very good appointment."
And Nick Cave, who had his first directing job at MELTDOWN under David's leadership said, "David is a visionary and inspirational. A great choice for the Adelaide Festival."
