Disabled Dachshund Creates Facebook Page to Help Other Disabled Animals

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (PressExposure) February 07, 2011 -- Techel's dog Frankie was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in 2006 which resulted in partial paralysis. Frankie was custom-fitted for a doggie wheelchair and does just about everything she used to do before she hurt herself. She lives life with gusto!

Frankie's mom, Barbara was so inspired by watching Frankie persevere that she wrote the true, inspirational Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Dog book series. In part, to bring more positive awareness to the blessings that animals with disabilities are. She said, "Animals don't look at it as a disability, but are just happy to be alive, and they just adjust and live life to the fullest no matter what their physical challenge." She also wrote the series to help children, as well as adults, see their challenges in a positive way, and to encourage others to reach out and be of service to their communities despite obstacles they face.

Since 2008 Frankie and Barbara have visited many schools, libraries, and organizations in their local state of Wisconsin, as well as classrooms and libraries across the US and Canada via Skype. Everywhere they go they continue to bring a positive face and voice to animals with disabilities. They are also a dedicated therapy dog team regularly visiting three facilities each month.

To expand on their mission, and because of the media attention they have gained, Barbara decided to start a Facebook page in hopes of helping animals in shelters and rescue that have disabilities, to find forever, loving homes. She said, "I've been blessed ten-fold by caring for Frankie and watching her live with such joy. She inspires me each and every day to not let the little things get me down. I want others to see and understand that just because a pet has a disability does not mean they don't have love to give. In fact, I believe that often these animals are even more grateful to find someone who will love and care for them."

Frankie's Disabled Animal Rescue and Resource page is set up for any rescue organization or humane society to feel free to post photos and stories of animals they may have with a disability that are looking for a home. Many of these organizations have Facebook pages of their own, but by cross posting, and working with others such as Frankie's page, Techel believes every little bit helps to make a big difference and ultimately help more pets with physical challenges find a permanent home.

Techel's books have won many awards, as well as Frankie's story has been published in two books about pets by major publishers. Her story has also been featured in many national magazines such as Woman's World and The American Dog. Frankie is also Wisconsin Pet Hall of Fame Companion Dog 2009.
