San Diego, CA (PressExposure) May 26, 2012 -- Cohesive gel silicone implants, or gummy bear implants as they are more commonly known, have undergone extensive clinical testing in the past few years. In March, the FDA approved the first cohesive gel implant for the U. S. market, a breast implant made by Sientra, a Santa Barbara, California-based company that manufactures facial and body implants for use in plastic surgery.
For many women and plastic surgeons, this represents an exciting development in the field of plastic surgery. Breast augmentation has been the most popular plastic surgery procedure for several years in a row, and the addition of new choices makes it easier for plastic surgeons to customize the procedure to each patient. The Sientra silicone breast implant comes in a range of size, as well as round and shaped (which come with an oval, round, or classic base) implants.
San Diego plastic surgeon Vincent Marin is prepared to provide Sientra's silicone breast implants to appropriate patients. He feels that the implants are a good choice for certain patients. However, Dr. Marin prefers round implants for most patients. Despite many new breast implant options being introduced to the American market in the past few years, round implants continue to offer the look that patient's desire.
The FDA, which will not refer to Sientra's implants as gummy bear breast implants, has not commented on the differences among the silicone implants that are currently on the market (Allergan and Mentor's silicone implants have been in use since the silicone implant ban was lifted at the end of 2006).
According to Sientra and some plastic surgeons, there are several advantages associated with the cohesive gel silicone implant product, including a decreased risk of implant complications such as rippling, deflation, and capsular contracture. Some also believe gummy bear implants result in an improvement in breast shape.
Some disadvantages of Sientra's breast implants include:
The gel is thicker and may not feel as natural
They are more expensive
A larger scar is required
Implant may rotate in the pocket before the healing process is complete
Implant is more difficult to remove during revision surgery
