Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) July 19, 2010 -- The authorities of the international airport of Abu Dubai have decided to forbid the new technology of full-body scanners saying it goes against Dubai's national customs and ethics.
"I do not feel that it is necessary for us to implement such a technology while we are operating different methods and have different avenues that have worked so far," said Ahmed bin Thani, the Dubai police's director of airport security.
"The use of such a device violates personal privacy and it raises a very sensitive issue for passengers," he said, "In addition to the fact that it does not comply to our national ethics".
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) does not demand airports to use the body scanning technology said by Bin Thani.
He explained, "The acquisition of such devices is based on the decision of every member state of the ICAO and is not a mandatory measure instructed by them".
The Dubai police's deputy director of airport security, Omar al Amri, said Dubai International Airport owns more than 3, 200 operational security cameras, used throughout its three terminals. They may introduce face-recognition technology to boost safety.
Even though, Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, Islamic custom and native traditions still have to be honored by visitors. Before someone takes photos of a local woman, consent has to be obtained. Numerous women clothe themselves with black colored Abaya and some even cover their lips and eyes.
While Abu Dubai won't permit women to be body xrayed at the airport, France has finally passed the bill that bans the wearing of the full Islamic veil in public. It has been reported however, that some wealthy men are prepared to pay the fines of anyone breaking the law.
The French justice minister, who drafted the bill, Michèle Alliot-Marie, says "The full Islamic veil challenges the values that we share and the very principles according to which we live together."
Well-off tourists from Gulf states, as well as all foreigners, will all be affected by the ban.
While women wearing a full face veil in public could be hit with a 150 euro fine, the bill demands a much stronger punishment for men found guilty of making their wives or daughters cover their face: a one-year jail sentence and a 15,000 euro fine.
All religious symbols are banned in French public schools and government buildings and not just Islamic symbols.
The Spanish government also moved to disallow any religious symbols in public spaces, such as barracks and jails, schools and hospitals and in all official ceremonies. The purpose was to offer 'religiously neutral public spaces'.
