Bristol, United Kingdom (PressExposure) April 30, 2009 -- The fact that women such as Crystal Renn and Velvet dâAmour have been able not just to become a model, but to enjoy a highly successful modelling career [http://www.modelsdirect.com/find_a_model/index.html], just goes to show how the modelling industry is opening up and changing for the better.
New York based plus size model Crystal Renn began her modelling career at the age of 14, but suffered a health crisis after being told to lose weight. She went on to reconsider the advice she had been given, put her weight back on and launched her new career as a size 12 model.
Renn has gone on to a highly successful modelling career, appearing in no less than four international Vogue editions, and receiving the honour of becoming the only plus size model to appear on the cover of Harper's Bazaar. She has done runway work also, for example modelling Jean-Paul Gaultierâs Spring/Summer prêt-à -porter collection in Paris in 2006.
Velvet dâAmour is another plus size woman to have become a model and challenge conventional notions of who can be a model. Among the many achievements in her modelling career, she has also modelled a prêt-à -porter collection for Jean-Paul Gaultier. She also works as a fashion photographer and actor. She played the title role in the 2006 French film Avida, directed by Gustave de Kervern and Benoît Delépine,
There are more and more opportunities for plus size models at all levels of the industry, according to Damian OâConnor, Managing Director at UK modelling agency Models Direct [http://www.modelsdirect.com].
âWe frequently get briefs for clients who are looking for larger models that real people can relate to,â says OâConnor.
Could the days of the supermodel waif be numbered?
