New Delhi, India (PressExposure) March 15, 2012 -- Moolchand has achieved yet another breakthrough by successfully accomplishing a total knee replacement surgery on a super obese patient (BMI > 50), the first of its kind in India. Sam, a 61 year old American patient who weighs 160 kg was denied knee replacement surgery in USA due to his extreme morbid obesity.
Conventionally Knee replacements have been avoided in obese individuals due to fears of high anesthetic risks and other complications such as wound healing issues, blood clot in leg veins, and doubts about long term survival of the implant. However, a recent study from Mayo Clinic School USA, suggests that higher body mass index is not associated with worse pain outcomes after total knee arthroplasty. Another study by Prof Cyrus Cooper from UK, concluded that the benefits are apparent in obese as well as non-obese patients, and there seems no justification for withholding Total knee replacement surgery from obese patients solely on the grounds of their body mass index.
At Moolchand Medcity, in constant endeavor to provide world class facility to its patients, Dr Sanjay Gupta, Consultant, Joint Replacement, Moolchand Orthopedics Hospital, New Delhi took up this challenge and performed the surgery successfully. Patient was extremely satisfied as he stood up by himself on the first post-operative day and was able to walk with the help of a walker on the 2nd post-operative day without much pain.
"We managed to get a successful outcome by using latest medical technology and good preoperative planning. Modern high flexion knee implant design was used and all possible precautions were taken to avoid complications. Addressing to the large body mass index of the patient, a bariatric OT table and a special bed on the ward was arranged. We used mechanical anti DVT foot and calf pumps during intra and post-operative period. A combination of spinal and epidural anesthesia was used to provide excellent post-operative pain relief." says Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
