The book looks deeply into the mysteries of gender identity and will be welcomed by those in the trans-gender world as it will offer a notable resource for families, friends and colleagues of trans people. There are so many different terms in the gender identity world that the first thing the author felt was needed was to cut to the chase and define all the myriad of terms one comes up against from Gender identity disorder, gender dysphoria, tans-gender, transsexual and so on.
It is perhaps little known that gender issues can arise from development of the fetal brain during pregnancy. The book takes a close look at this aspect. One might wonder, what are the implications for the nature vs nurture theorists if this is accurate and there is a rising body of scientific evidence to endorse the idea that it is?
The primary factor which determines gender development in early pregnancy has now been proved to be the levels of hormones such as testosterone, estrogens and androgens which a fetus is exposed to in early pregnancy.
A drug which was designed to prevent miscarriage is now believed to have had the unintentional side effect of determining a fetuses sexuality and gender identity. The book looks into this belief in some detail.
The unfortunate side effect of this drug was that from time to time a baby was born in circumstances where it was complicated to easily decide if the infant was a boy or a girl. There was extraoridnary pressure to issue a birth certificate which led to decisions being made about gender and sexuality on the spur of the moment.
Acting on the recommendation of specialists parents time and again made the choice for their baby so that rather than grow up with uncharacterized genitalia there would be certainty of gender. The hope of course was that because a decision had been made early in life, none of this would be recollected by the newborn. Research has shown that many such children later express great dissatisfaction with their genitalia and the choices made for them by their parents.
Many such children have had little or no option but to live with the decision as to their gender which was made for them by their family.
