Dubai, India (PressExposure) November 04, 2010 -- First of a series of initiatives designed to raise awareness of the value of national heritage as a tourist attraction: Al Muhairi.

The inaugural Heritage Workshop organised by the National Council for Tourism and Antiquities (NCTA), got under way at the Buhaira Corniche Hotel, Sharjah, with groups of scientists and people working with the heritage industry attending.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammed Khamis bin Hareb Al Muhairi, Director General of the National Council for Tourism and Antiquities said that this workshop was the first in a series of initiatives undertaken by the council to raise awareness of the importance of national heritage in the tourism industry.

Featuring a panel of international experts from around the region, the workshop will train delegates in ways to register cultural and natural sites on the World Heritage List. This increases the visibility of these sites and adds to the country's appeal as a tourist destination.

The workshop is part of the NCTA's strategic plan to develop capacities of the staff working in the antiquities sector across the country.

Currently the World Heritage List has 901 cultural and natural sites around the world, of which 67 sites are from the Arab world. The UAE has significant archaeological and natural sites that deserve to be part of the List.
