St Albans, United Kingdom (PressExposure) May 25, 2010 -- Alan Dean, currently following the Howard's Way very low calorie diet (VLCD), has not only lost 28 kilos just 11 weeks in to the 12 week diet but, in the process, has saved over £2,000 through not buying his 'usual food'.
Alan Dean - a graphic technician by profession - turned up at Howard's Way at the end of February for an exploratory chat about the 'total food replacement' (TFR) treatment involved in the Howard's Way VLCD programme. Starting with a body mass index (BMI) of 42, Alan has shed almost four and a half stones (28 kilos) in 11 weeks on the Howard's Way diet and now has a BMI of 33.
Alan is delighted with the progress he's making with the Howard's Way diet. He commented: "Not only have I shed a great deal of surplus weight already - making me healthier - but I'm also wealthier as a result of not buying the food I used to.
"For me, this wasn't really surprising as I knew I spent a lot each week on take away food and food shopping."
Obesity specialist and the founder of the Howard's Way VLCD, Penelope Howard, said: "Saving money in this way is an unintentional by-product of following the diet but, especially in these tough economic times, it's good to be able to lose weight and gain money - rather than the other way around!"
Alan continued: "After seeing how good my friend looked, who had done the Howard's Way diet, I thought I'd go along to hear all about the programme.
"What I think makes the programme so successful is the strictness of the diet," he added.
"You're told you can't eat while you're on the programme under any circumstances. You can't make any mistakes because you know what you're allowed to have.
"There are no misunderstandings: everything is laid out as clearly as it possibly can be. It's very 'black and white'."
When he signed up for the Howard's Way diet, Alan had been planning to install a new kitchen at his home. So he ripped out his old kitchen and threw it in the skip.
"I knew, then, that I wouldn't be able to cook, even if I was asked to," Alan said. "Actually, I enjoy cooking.
"I'm quite good at it and friends of mine enjoy the results. But, without a kitchen, I can say 'no' to cooking without feeling guilty.
"I'm well over half way through the Howard's Way diet and, obviously, it is so much easier doing this while I don't need to cook for myself."
Alan added: "I couldn't believe it when I went into a shop the other day and a chap in there, whom I have known for years, asked if my brother had been in before. He really didn't know it was me!"
Howard's Way currently has centres in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire; Stanmore; Luton & Dunstable, and Victoria, in London. As well as running Group meetings at these venues, Howard's Way also reaches out to every household in Great Britain via its 'Postal Programme'.
