London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) December 28, 2009 -- IRIE! dance theatre has been awarded £5,000 by the NHS Lewisham via its Evelyn Chooses Life Fund. This grant is to support IRIE! dance theatre's 2010 Dance Yourself Fit program.
Dance Yourself Fit was introduced by the dance company in 2008 and was very well received in particular because the program is family orientated. All the classes in this program are for adults and children over 8 years old.
The program will include Soca Aerobics and African Dance Classes and the first 'term' will culminate with another family event program made popular by IRIE! dance theatre called FLOW - Family Learning Open Weekend. FLOW gives individuals the opportunity to sample African and Caribbean dance classes, drumming, mask-making, story-telling and much more.
However, there's also a sobering element to Dance Yourself Fit. IRIE! dance theatre is based in the London Borough of Lewisham which nationally is in the bottom 20% of areas for deprivation, life expectancy, and premature deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease. There are also significant health inequalities within the borough itself. Therefore initiatives such as Dance Yourself Fit are important in helping to tackle the local and national health inequalities.
And this is why, in addition to the weekly dance classes, IRIE! dance theatre will also be offering workshops on nutrition to support individuals and families in their quest to improve their well-being through healthy eating.
The Dance Yourself Fit program starts on 11 January 2010. For further information and or to book your place please contact IRIE! dance theatre on 020 8691 6099.
