Inside the Flame Is a Cool Place for Musician David Geist

Santa Fe, New Mexico (PressExposure) May 27, 2015 -- This past April 8th, musician David Geist released his second CD called Inside the Flame. The music is a soulful and artful combo platter that sounds more George Winston then Geist's Broadway roots. Small wonder, in 2005, this Broadway musician made his way away from the hectic lifestyle of New York City to the peaceful hills of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Inside the Flame, an entirely original composition has a mostly mellow and soothing through-line.

The CD title track is an artful yet robust song that takes the listener on a journey of ultimate peace and tranquility. One of the tracks on Inside the Flame, "The Letter" Geist says was inspired by the Native American lifestyle of the southwest. Other Inside the Flame songs could easily transfer to movie scoring in the tradition of Dances with Wolves and other Westerns that tug at heartstrings.

As a New Yorker most of his adult life, Geist was far away from the open lands of New Mexico. He was a Broadway musician, who played piano and keys in the pits of many shows. His credentials are impressive - Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon, Passion, Wicked and The Lion King all were all his homes over the years. Geist says one of his career defining moments was when Stephen Sondheim congratulated him on his work in the musical Passion. "When he came up to me and told me he really loved my playing, I remember thinking I really had arrived," Geist Says.

In 2005, when the Broadway hit The Boy from Oz ended, Geist, the boy from New York City, packed his bags and headed west. Geist says he was looking for a different quality of life. Santa Fe was quick to embrace one of Broadway's greatest talents. He quickly began wooing the locals and Santa Fe tourists. It wouldn't take long before Pranzo, a local favorite Italian eatery, took note of Geist's talent and teamed up with him. Pranzo Geist Cabaret opened in 2006.

If Geist's business model sounds similar to Michael Feinstein's room at Hotel Nikko, that's because it is. The only difference is David Geist is the featured talent in his room, with cabaret stars making only guest appearances.

Earlier this month The Santa Fean magazine named Geist one of Santa Fe's top 25 favorite residents. Geist plans to keep recording original compositions and playing at his cabaret room. He looks forward to touring more often.

David Geist has created himself as one of the keepers of The Great American Songbook. Whether he's playing on Broadway or in Santa Fe, his talent and art is undeniable.
