Internet Kill Switch In Hands Of US President
Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) June 28, 2010 -- Chairman of the U.S. Homeland Security committee and former presidential candidate, Joe Lieberman, Independent senator, raised concerns about a 'Digital Pearl Harbour'. Sen. John Rockefeller first introduced the idea of a 'kill switch' in April 2009. The Senate committee have approved the amended bill, which would grant the President of the United States, very wide emergency powers over the Internet, if a national emergency arose. The bill declares the Internet is a National Asset. President Obama would have the power to order search engines such as Yahoo, Google and YouTube, all located in the United States., to defer access to their websites any time the government believed here was a national crisis, or an emergency. No effort has been made in the bill to explain the exact features of an emergency or crisis. The 'kill switch' would thus give government power of controlling to the Internet. Google alone has an estimated two billion hits a day from 300 million users. If the bill succeeds the American government bureaucracy would use tax dollars to discover private networks, find choke points and places where they can control the stream of communication. Furthermore, Internet companies are by law, going to be required to give the federal bureaucrats whatever account, network, usage and history information they consider appropriate. All in the name of cyber space safety. The law could demand that companies, where the executive branch is felt to be "critical" to adopt limitations on who it could lease to work with network security, to a restricted group of those who had received government training and certification. The Internet is an important means of communication and self-organization among the population, letting them to respond to any crisis or debate. Any move to limit this is perceived as a direct threat to the constitutional rights of assembly and speech upon which the government cannot infringe. One Pew research study cites as many as 69% of Americans are recently getting news from Internet sites. While another review states that the internet has outweighed newspapers and is fast challenging television as the utmost source of news and information. The internet has proven it can react faster and in most cases better than traditional media outlets. Proponents of the fresh law say that in the last three years the number of attacks on Government departments, from Cyber Space, have risen by 400%. China has attempted for long enough to silence and control Cyber Space, but with only partial success. The Internet, by its very nature, is not easily controlled by any government — it is the ultimate embodiment of free press and free speech. Changes are needed in the proposed law, in o rder to ensure that cyber security measures do not unnecessarily infringe on speech, free privacy, and other civil liberties interests, not only in America, but around the globe.
