Japanese Given Priority Over Afghans Mineral Wealth

Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) June 22, 2010 -- Japan, not the U.S., takes priority other nations when it comes to mining his country's new found vast mineral deposits, announced Afghan President, Hamid Karzai.

"Morally Afghanistan should give access as a priority to those countries that have helped Afghanistan massively in the past few years," Karzai said. Japan’s position as Afghanistan’s second- biggest donor, after the United States, should allow Japan to benefit from special access to Afghan resources. The mineral wealth has a value of between 1-3 trillion dollars.

Karzai presented this public announcement while on a five-day trip to Japan. He said the Afghan government is working to fight corruption and congratulated the Japanese leader for his assistance.

He arranged to pay a visit to the Japanese trading company, Mitsubishi Corporation, to discuss mining investment. Karzai said he was anxious about a threatening international combat over his country’s untouched mineral wealth.

A New York Times study claims that the majority of Afghans do not go along with Karzai’s optimism about the deposits. The challenges Afghanistan is facing include a lack of security and infrastructure, with some of the discovered deposits deep in Taliban strongholds.

A political science professor at Stanford and the author of "The Paradox of Plenty, said "Countries with a history of conflict have perverse effects from mineral wealth -- more war, more corruption, less democracy and more inequality". This reveals why the populations of poor nations like Nigeria often get poorer, after oil is discovered, where only the few elite reap the benefits.

At the same time as Karzai made his statement, news reports appeared that Afghanistan and Pakistan planned to negotiate with Pakistan-based insurgents, the Haqqani’s militia.

The meetings are a reminder that both Pakistan and Afghanistan have agendas that are independent of their relationship with the U.S. They may draw different lines in deciding how and when to make peace.

American military fatalities in Afghanistan total 1,103. The total cost of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq went beyond $1 trillion, in May 2010, according to National Priorities Project's Cost of War.
