London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) November 30, 2009 -- The nation's favourite department store achieved a sterling total of £78.54 million last week, which is 15 per cent up on the same week last year.
Toys have had a stellar week, with the blue Mini Micro T-bar Scooter (£46.95) the best seller. Wheeled floor toys saw an increase of 150 per cent at John Lewis Oxford Street alone. Traditional toys are also very popular with Sylvanian Families seeing strong sales.
Figures also show that big boys' games like air hockey and football tables are firm favourites for gifts along with knitwear, Fat Face and Ted Baker clothing and Calvin Klein underwear.
Furniture, upholstery and beds are still performing well with furnishing fabrics up as much as 400 per cent up in individual John Lewis branches as customers continue to prepare their homes for Christmas. Sewing machines are also reporting healthy sales as the crafty, make do and mend trend continues to grow.
David Barford, Director of Selling Operations for John Lewis, says, 'The toy department has been incredibly busy this week. With the micro scooter topping the list of best sellers and the popularity of radio controlled cars and remote controlled helicopters, we think there will have been some dads playing a part in the purchasing, and perhaps even buying gifts for their children that they would like to play with themselves.
Other departments are also outperforming with men's fashion sales very strong as women start shopping for their partners. Customers are continuing to respond really well to our inspiring products, great value and differentiated service.'
