Shorewood, Wisconsin (PressExposure) November 08, 2009 -- Joseph Spence, Sr. Received Warm Welcome from Lithuanian People Wisconsin poet Joseph Spence, Sr. attended the Joint 5th World Haiku Association from Japan and the 20th Druskininkai Poetic Fall Convention in Lithuanian. He spoke with the attendees about his newly released book, "The Awakened One Poetics." The people of Lithuanian and the Baltic regions who attended the conference were ecstatic about his haiku poems, his book, and his invented Epulaeryu poetry form.
Spence participated in poetry recitals in Vilnius, The Republic of Uzupis, and Druskininku;. He also took part in a panel discussion about his book and gave an in-depth analysis regarding the relationship of haiku poetry and his invented Epulaeryu poetry form to a jammed-packed audience.
The people accepted Spence as a wonderful person. They showed their appreciation in many ways with hugs and kind words of welcome. Spence recited several of his poems in Jamaikan Potwa and English. The translator assigned to Spence read the poems in the Lithuanian language. Spence and Japanese poet, Shintaro Aska, provided some entertainment for the people in The Uzupis Republic by singing one of Harry Belafonte's famous calypso songs, "Jamaican Farewell," which is popular in Japan.
During the conference, Spence was delighted to meet the Japanese Ambassador to Lithuania, Miyoko AKASHI, and presented to her a personally autographed copy of his book, "The Awakened One Poetics." The Druskininku; Museum also accepted of copy of Spence's book for permanent display with a smile and wonderful appreciation of gratitude.
The 121 poets from 23 different countries who attended the conference departed Vilnius for home on October 5, 2009. Naturally, lasting poetic relationships were developed between and among the participants. The next conference will meet in Tokyo, Japan in 2011.
The event was organized by Professor Ban'ya Natsuishi, Meiji University, co-founder and Director of World Haiku Association, Japan, and Kornelijus Platelis, President of Lithuanian Association of Artists.
Abbreviated Biography of Joseph S. Spence, Sr. is the author of "The Awakened One Poetics" (2009), "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul" (2006), winner of the 2009 Best Christian Poetry Award from ChristianStoryTellers.com, and "A Trilogy of Poetry, Prose and Thoughts for the Mind, Body and Soul" (2004). He invented the Epulaeryu poetry form, which focuses on succulent cuisines and drinks. He is published in various forums including: Cram 5 Chicago Poetry, World Haiku Association, Sound of Poetry Review, Poetinis Druskininku;, MÃ¶bius Haiku, Autumn Leaves Journal, Phoenix Magazine, and Taj Mahal Review. Joseph is a Goodwill Ambassador for the state of Arkansas, and is an adjunct faculty at Milwaukee Area Technical College. He has completed over twenty years of service with the U.S. Army, and is a recipient of the 2006 Poetry Ambassador Medal from The International Library of Poetry.
