Kansas City Professor Trades Paperclip for One Year of Rent

Olathe, KS (PressExposure) December 08, 2008 -- Jason Friedline, a professor at National American University in Kansas City, has successfully traded a paperclip he received from Donald Trump up to one year of rent in a two bedroom apartment in Kansas City. Friedline decided with his marketing class to try and duplicate the One Red Paperclip Project by Kyle MacDonald in 2006, who traded up from a paperclip to a house in a series of barters over a one-year period. The angle Friedline used was to get a paperclip from a celebrity which he received from Donald Trump in August of 2008. Since then he has traded for a canoe, a motorcycle, a go kart, computers, and finally for one year of rent in a two bedroom apartment. For barting Friedline has used Craigslist, Barterzap.com and his website http://www.goldenpaperclip.com. Friedline hopes to continue trading up until he has a new vehicle for his family. His trading has been featured in the Kansas City Star, the Olathe News, You Tube, and Channel 9 News in Kansas City. The apartment is the biggest trade to date and it is located at Appletree Apartments, 15 minutes north of Kansas City. “Some things are worth more to different people than to me or others,” he said. “I’ve learned to enjoy the process as much as the result. It’s fun to get trade offers. I’m constantly checking e-mail on my phone to see what I’m being offered.” Friedline spends time each week discussing the project with his marketing students, who originally did not believe he would embark on the experiment. “I told them I was going to show how to do non-traditional marketing and I believe I have shown them with this mission,” he said.
