Dana Point, CA (PressExposure) August 06, 2014 -- A star-studded line-up of national touring comedians are coming together on Monday, September 15th at the Irvine Improv to host Laughs for Leathernecks, a benefit show to raise funds for the Dana Point 5th Marines Regiment Support Group (DPMRSG), several hundred of whom will be deploying to the Middle East in September and leaving families and loved ones behind as the holiday season approaches.
The public is invited to attend and/or sponsor a Marine and his spouse for an evening out by visiting the DPMRSG website (http://www.danapoint5thmarines.com/laughs-for-leathernecks) and purchasing tickets. This event will be the first "fun-d raiser" to be held at the spectacular new home of the Irvine Improv at the Irvine Spectrum Center. The evening will also include a Silent Auction and door prizes.
Hosted by Orange County's own Tom Riehl, host of Riehl Food and winner of both America's Funniest People and the Eagle Rock Comedy Festival, the show will be headlined by James P. Connolly, himself a former Leatherneck who served with the "Fighting Fifth" during Operation Desert Storm. Adding to the laugh barometer that night will be two Special Guests: Rita Rudner and Fritz Coleman.
Ms. Rudner has been a frequent guest on Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show as well as performing at The Venetian in Las Vegas. Her first HBO special, Rita Rudner's One-Night Stand, was nominated for a number of awards. Local Weatherman Fritz Coleman of KNBC-LA a former Navy man, is repeating his performance for the Fifth to help say "thank you" and provide some mirth to the Marines.
Headliner Connolly is known for his many performances at the Comedy Store, the Improv, the Ice House Comedy Club and other major comedy venues as well as in commercials and movies.
In addition to having appeared in hotels and clubs on the Las Vegas Strip, Comedy Central, HBO and VH1, James hosted Live From Here on XM Radio for National Lampoon. He is one of the most played comedians on the Sirius XM Comedy Channels, a frequent guest on the Bob and Tom Radio Show and has also made multiple trips overseas to entertain the troops.
Filling out the Laughs for Leathernecks line-up is Laura Hayden, who is a self-described "Comedian / Doctor / Shoe Fanatic." Dr. Hayden is a practicing physical therapist, touring comedian and speaker. In addition to playing in venues all over the world, she also entertained the troops with AFE Entertainment (Military tours) visiting them in Djibouti, Oman, UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Bahrain, Qatar and throughout the USA.
Silent Auction prizes include an overnight stay with breakfast at the beautiful Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa, a champagne Sunset Cruise aboard the 82' schooner Curlew, "Dinner and Laughs" for up to eight people at your home prepared by Tom Riehl and VIP passes to an upcoming show at the Improv including dinner. The list was growing at press time.
