Fountain Valley, CA (PressExposure) February 19, 2009 -- On Feb 21, Pete Vara plans on running a 5k race with his class of student pacing many of them for their first 5k. But when he's finished with that run, he's going to immediately do a 10k run.
And for good measure, when that race is finished, he'll compete in a fast paced Reverse triathlon - a combination of running, bicycling and swimming.
Vara, a Fountain Valley resident, is running on behalf of A Snail's Pace Running Shop (also based in Fountain Valley) to "show that anything is possible if you put your mind to it." A Snail's Pace Running Academy will also be donating several paid coaching classes to the Los Alamitos Unified School District to their Get Fit Challenge program.
By day, Vara works at a small angel funding firm in Irvine that focuses on early stage startups, but he also teaches the beginning running program, or "Running 101," for A Snail's Pace Running Academy. Vara has completed both the half-marathon and marathon programs at A Snail's Pace Running Academy. He has completed Ironman competitions and 50-mile ultra running events. He teaches running because "it's my way of giving back," he said.
He's also committed to the training that A Snail's Pace offers.
"This is a local running store where you can go in and sign up for various programs, and it doesn't matter where you are fitness-wise," Vara said.
