London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) February 22, 2009 -- A key figure in the UK`s environmental policy making has spoken out in favour of every new public building tapping into the earth as a natural heat source. Environment Agency chairman Lord Smith suggested that the government should take the lead in the battle against climate change and diminishing energy reserves. `We do indeed live in extraordinary times,` he said. `We are in the midst of a major financial crisis; we are on the cusp of a serious energy crisis; and all the while we are stoking the fires of a potentially catastrophic climate crisis. `The first and most obvious answer to the question is that (the government) - and the broader public sector - should be leading by example. New buildings should be fitted with ground-source pumps. `There has been a growing concern over climate change and energy sources and the UK government will want to ensure that it has some well thought out plans ready for the upcoming meeting on climate change in Copenhagen in December.
