Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) September 28, 2009 -- All you have to do to maintain your air conditioning is to clean or replace your filters.

First, shut off all air conditioners in your house. Next, you need to find the vent, or return in your house which takes in the room air. It is usually located near the thermostat in the main hallway or a main area, but can also be found in the garage or in a closet. Open the grill or door panel. You will need to unscrew it or you may even be able to pry it open manually. Remove the filter. Make sure you study the way the filter is before you remove it because you will have to put it back.

Next, identify whether your filter is replaceable or reusable. If you have a replaceable filter, usually made of cardboard or paper, you will need to take it to the store or take its dimensions and purchase the exact same one. If you have a permanent filter, usually made of metal, you will need to clean it. Take it outside and scrub it with a brush. Rinse the filter with warm water and dishwashing soap and let it dry thoroughly.

Next, wipe off all dust in the return, including the grill and inside the vent. You may also use a vacuum hose to clean off the area. Once your filter is dry, replace it and close the grill or latch. You are done. The first time you replace your filter you should continue to check it every week for about a month, cleaning it or replacing it every time. After about a month, the excess dust in your house will be removed and you can clean or replace your filters every 30-60 days. If you live in a particularly polluted or dusty area or in an area that has construction, if you have pets, or if someone living in the house has allergies or asthma, you should maintain monthly. Finally, if you find that your filters are coming out completely clean, you should call an air conditioning specialist to make sure nothing is wrong with your air conditioners.
