Merida Real Estate to Receive Further Funding for Historic Center

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico (PressExposure) September 15, 2010 -- One of the cities which has been growing as a colonial favorite for retirees living in Mexico has been lined up to receive a large amount of funding to further improve the feature that is drawing more and more Americans and Canadians to choose this city; its colonial city center which is the second largest in Mexico.

The city is Merida, located on the Yucatan Peninsula just a couple of hours from Cancun. Unlike Cancun, Merida is a colonial city, now nearing 500 years since it was established - and, in fact, it was established on the sight of a much older Mayan city. One fairly unique Mexico home option among the this country's expat communities is that of an old colonial.

Over the past decade it has been gaining a considerable amount of attention since, in addition to the charming historic city center, Merida is also only 30 minutes away from the beachfront, and the surrounding countryside is full of quaint small towns and old estates. In addition to these advantages, the cost of living is low and Merida real estate is available for a very competitive prices.

During the summer of 2010, the state government announced that the city of Mérida and surrounding area will be benefited with federal and state support for the further development of tourism infrastructure projects, with a total of over 143 million pesos (about 12 million dollars.)

The Federal Secretary of Tourism, Gloria Guevara, announced the joint contribution, of which the Yucatan state government will give 71 million 500 thousand and the rest will come from the federal level.

After the federal announcement that it will promote Yucatan as one of the nation's premier tourist destinations to offer the world, the mayor of the city confirmed his government will do their part to invest funds and time into the continued renovation and upkeep of the historic center of Merida. The mayor reported that one of the actions being considered is to apply the new resources in lighting the grand old churches of the Historic Center. On the promotional side, the government is aiming to make visitors aware of the buildings, museums and tours available in this city.

For retirees who buy a home in Merida, this investment will mean added atmosphere to the already charming city center; the added tourism promotion will bring further investment, more services and in general a more comfortable lifestyle. The city already includes many modern services to complement the beauty of the historic center, including malls and state-of-the-art hospitals.

The nearby towns of Progreso (on the beachfront), Valladolid (a colonial town with as of yet underdeveloped tourism potential), and Izamal Tinum will also benefit from the investment.
