New York, NY (PressExposure) July 15, 2011 -- Miami Dade College (MDC) and the CINTAS Foundation and announce the start of the annual competition for the 2011 CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Creative Writing, administered by the Foundation and the CINTAS Fellowship Program at MDC. MDC will host a variety of events in October at its National Historic Landmark Miami Freedom Tower, which will showcase works by this year's finalists in the three disciplines: music, visual art and creative writing.
The CINTAS Foundation awards fellowships annually to creative artists of Cuban lineage who reside outside of Cuba. Hortensia E. Sampedro, president of the CINTAS Foundation announced that the winner of the 2011 - 2012 Fellowship in Creative Writing will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to pursue a creative writing project outlined in their application. Since it was established in 1963, the CINTAS Fellowship Program has honored more than 300 artists.
The only one of its kind in the nation, the program has honored some of the world's most talented Cuban artists. Past creative writing fellows include Ivan Acosta, Magaly Alabau, Reinaldo Arenas, Antonio Benitez-Rojo, Lourdes Blanco, Lourdes Casal, Adrian Castro, Silvia Curbelo, Uva de Aragon, multiple Obie Awards winner Maria Irene Fornes, Cristina Garcia, Lourdes Gil, Pulitzer Prize winner Oscar Hijuelos, Manuel Martin, Pablo Medina, Carlos Alberto Montaner, Achy Obejas, Martha Padilla, Ricardo Pau Llosa, and Armando Valladares, among others.
