England, United Kingdom (PressExposure) June 01, 2009 -- If 56 year old Marie Helvin can front an incredibly successful campaign for major UK retail chain Marks & Spencer, then whatâs stopping other older models from continuing their modelling careers into middle age? So asks Damian OâConnor, Managing Director of Models Direct, one of the UKâs largest modelling agencies.
In fact, according to OâConnor, more and more women are finding that the decision to become a model leads to work beyond their teens and twenties. Outside the world of high fashion, there are many clients looking for models of all ages, he says.
âSome of our clients want to find a model of a certain age because the product or service which they are promoting appeals to a certain demographic, and so they choose to use models of that age in their photography and artworkâ says OâConnor.
âOn the other hand, some clients just like to reflect the true diversity of the community at large. Thatâs something that doesnât happen so much in the world of catwalk modelling.â
Helvin then, is one of those rare cases of someone who began her career in modelling at a young age, worked in the world of high fashion during her modelling âprimeâ, and has sustained a career into her fifties. In fact, she shows no sign of slowing down.
So what is her secret? Well, there are many and they are varied. Over her long career, she has learned exactly what works for her and what doesnât. For example, she wears four inch heels (no taller), and pencil skirts cut just above the knee, in classic 1950s style.
She says that good tailoring is absolutely vital (recommending Antonio Berardi and Edward Sexton), and counts white shirts, the best trousers she can afford, fitted cocktail dresses, and drainpipe jeans among her wardrobe essentials.
