Modern Printing Techniques

London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) October 16, 2009 -- Computer to plate (CTP) is an imaging technology used in modern printing processes. In this technology, an image created in a Desktop Publishing application is output directly to a printing plate.

This compares with the older technology, computer to film where the computer file is output onto a photographic film. This film is then used to make a printing plate.

The advantages of Computer to plate are the elimination of the need for film and related developer chemicals, thus increasing sharpness and detail. Plates are produced in less time, are more consistent and at a lower cost, and can significantly increase plate production outputs.

High-volume litho print is used today to produce just about any smooth, mass-produced item with print and graphics on it. In offset litho printing depends on photographic processes, flexible aluminum, polyester, mylar or paper printing plates are used.

Modern printing plates have a brushed or roughened texture and are covered with a photosensitive emulsion. An image on the plate emulsion can be created through direct laser imaging in a CTP (Computer-To-Plate) device called a platesetter.

The development of the digital platesetter eliminated film negatives altogether by exposing printing plates directly from digital input, a process known as computer to plate printing.

Digital printing is the reproduction of digital images on a physical surface, it is generally used for short print runs, and for the customization of print media. Printing plates or film are not required, therefore less initial setup, it is useful for rapid turnaround, and is cost effective for small print runs.
