San Diego , CA (PressExposure) July 21, 2014 -- Basketball star Stephen Curry has teamed up with The Dream Ten, an inspiring, ten-book basketball series by acclaimed children's author A.D. Erving, to help promote literacy among young fans across the country. The series - for children and teens ages 7-14 - follows a group of underdog basketball players between the ages of ten and twelve who form their own team after being rejected by the local club team. The Dream Ten follows these youngsters' basketball adventures and the lessons they learn on and off of the court. The central message of The Dream Ten is that all of us, despite the odds, can reach our dreams. And it's in the reaching that we find out who we really are.
Stephen Curry, star guard for the Golden State Warriors, identified with the book's message of resilience, positivity, and good sportsmanship. Like the members of The Dream Ten, Stephen Curry knows what it's like to be the underdog: in 2008, he led his small school, Davidson College, to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Since bursting onto the national hoops scene, Curry's spot-on shooting and winning smile have made him an inspiration to basketball fans everywhere.
Author A.D. Erving, a former professional basketball player and coach himself, recognized Curry as the perfect representative for the series. After reading the first book of the collection, "David's Miracle," Curry immediately thought of the children that The Dream Ten might inspire, and enthusiastically agreed to raise awareness and support.
"I really think it's a great series," Curry said. "I identified right away with David and his friends; I know what it's like to be the underdog and to have people doubt you. The stories are fun, but I think the messages are equally important: work hard, stay positive, and believe in yourself. These are the kind of values I've always believed in. Kids are going to love it."
Both Curry and Erving are committed to making The Dream Ten a unique, web-driven venture, embracing e-publishing and new media to appeal to a new generation of young sports fans.
