Stevens Point, WI (PressExposure) August 10, 2011 -- The National Wellness Institute presented The 2011 Halbert L. Dunn Wellness Award to Donald B. Ardell, PhD, of St. Petersburg, Florida, during the 36th Annual National Wellness Conference, held July 18-21, 2011, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Dr. Ardell wrote the book High Level Wellness: An Alternative to Doctors, Drugs, and Disease in 1976 and helped to spark the wellness movement. He is an active writer, speaker, and teacher on the subject of wellness. Since 1984, he has published 74 quarterly print editions of the Ardell Wellness Report and more than 500 periodic e-newsletters.
Don often recites from speeches of the great 19th century American orator, Robert Green Ingersoll. One of Don's themes is as follows, from the words of Ingersoll: "So let us suck this orange of life dry, so that when death does come, we can politely say to him, 'You are welcome to the peelings. What little there was we have enjoyed.'" REAL wellness as Don describes it "embraces reason over superstition, exuberance over moderation, athleticism over normalcy and liberty over inhibition."
In August 2010, Ardell was given the "Lifetime Achievement Award" in Dusseldorf by the German Wellness Association. He has also been named a "Healthy America Fitness Leader" by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1991) and serves on many boards of national organizations. Still competitive at 73, he has won numerous national championships and world triathlon and duathlon championships, most recently in 2009 (Gold Coast, Australia) and 2010 (Budapest, Hungary).
Don has an urban planning background as well as a doctorate in public health. His degrees are from George Washington University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Stanford University School of Business and the Union Institute in Cincinnati.
The Halbert L. Dunn Wellness Award is the most prestigious award presented by the National Wellness Institute and is regarded as one of the highest honors in the health promotion and wellness fields. Recipients of the award have shown a dedication to wellness over the course of their lifetime, making many significant contributions and offering leadership that furthered wellness.
