Phoenix, AZ (PressExposure) June 08, 2009 -- Men are better at slimming down. Data from two different contests, the Natural Weight For Optimized Living⢠Chubby Hubby Contest on Phoenix Radio Mix 96.9 and The Brideâs Battle of the Bulge Challenge on John Jay and Richâs 104.7 Kiss-FM showed that men lost on average 33% more of their total body weight than the women during a 7 week contest period.
The group of 5 women lost a respectable 82 lbs, representing an average loss of 10% of their body weight. The group of 6 men topped that with a whopping 250 lbs lost; it translated to an average loss of 13.0% of their body weight over the same period.
Why do men lose weight faster than women? The truth is, men have two major weight-loss advantages over women: One involves their metabolism, which enables them to burn calories at a faster rate than women; the second revolves around the fact that men tend to be more active than their female counterparts. These two major factorsâmore calories burned at rest and more calories burned in activityâtranslate into faster weight loss for guys.
Men are biologically programmed to have higher amounts of lean body mass, or muscle, than women. Lean body mass is the key factor that determines the rate of one's metabolism, the body's calorie-burning system. Since men have more muscle, their metabolisms are higher, and they burn more calories even when they're resting, so the final result is a more rapid weight loss. How much faster are men's metabolisms than women's? Research has found that on average the metabolism of a man is 5 to 10 percent higher than that of a woman of the same weight and height.
Dr. Cristina Romero Bosch, who monitored the contestants over the 7 week period notes, âMen tend to have a more muscle mass than women do and, as muscle uses up energy, it means that men often lose weight a little faster than women. Men often see very good weight losses in the first few weeks, which motivates them to carry on and they often reach targets quicker than women.
Gail Wiley, Natural Weightâs Director of Operations adds, âMen tend to be focused when they start on a healthy eating plan. Moreover, they tend to feel less social pressure than women feel and have fewer negative feelings about previous diets they may have tried.â
The Good News for Women. Women do have an edge over men in other critical areas of weight management. For example, women tend to be more attentive to what's going on with their weight (e.g., they know why they should work to lose weight), and are better able to make the connection between food and emotions. There is one more area where women have the edge, weight-wise. When men deposit fat, it most often goes to their middles, while women's excess weight tends to settle below the belt. And it turns out that the "pear-shaped" body has a health advantage over the "apple": Those who carry extra fat mostly around their middles are at higher risk of developing heart disease than those who are bottom-heavy.
The Bottom Line is weight loss is a very personal journey. Plans that are customized, like the Natural Weight For Optimized Living⢠Program are fundamental. But while we are all different, we all have the same goal - successful weight management. Whether you are a man or a woman; remember, not only can you learn from one another, you can have some fun along the way.
To help all of the winners to keep losing, Natural Weight For Optimized Living is offering their program free to all of the contestants for one year.
