Boston, MA (PressExposure) January 05, 2009 -- Can a Pig Dance?
If you're Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig, you can. Gwendolyn is the brainchild of author David Ira Rottenberg who along with illustrator, Lesley C. Anderson has just published his first children's book.
The 40 page hardback with full color illustrations ($15.95 Cedar Crest Books) has gotten off to a running start since it hit stores and big online book outlets like Amazon.
Rottenberg says, "Sales, especially on Amazon, have been brisk. Amazon started selling our book at full price which is what they do with books that are relatively unknown and within a month they marked the book down due to the volume of sales."
Primarily, however, the books are marketed to ballet stores as Gwendolyn is a pig who longs to arabesque. Along the way she's helped by her friend, Omar, and her ballet teacher Natasha Levertov.
Rottenberg's creations have been brought to life by Lesley C. Anderson, the book's illustrator. Ms Anderson, a Rockport, MA native, has had her artwork featured in galleries and museums throughout the North Shore and currently works as a web-designer and pet portrait artist. Her love of the stage, however, has taken her from ballet lessons to community theatre to writing and producing children's musicals.
The duo teamed up when Rottenberg advertised for an illustrator on Craigslist. Rottenberg says, "I got over 200 responses and finally boiled my selection down to five. Then, one hot summer day, I visited the town ice-cream store and asked parents if I could show the artists' sample drawings to their kids. The parents agreed and in a very short time I had the opinion of about 20 kids. Almost all the kids picked Lesley's sample and Gwendolyn was born."
Rottenberg has written three business books with Jeff Shuman, a business professor at Bentley College, published by Dearborn Trade and Butterworth-Heinemann and a fiction book published by Grove Press but for Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig he decided to go it alone. He had the picture book printed in China under his own imprint, Cedar Crest Books.
He is planning a second printing in January and working on a plot for Gwendolyn's second book. She's a pig who likes to keep dancing.
Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and at all major bookstores.
