Waterloo, Ontario Canada (PressExposure) September 12, 2012 -- Siborg Systems Inc. has released their ingenious answer to the common problem of testing and evaluating surface mount devices, the Smart Tweezers ST5. The world renowned LCR- and ESR-meter mounted with a pair of tweezers tips.
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is the leading method for constructing electronic equipment. These components, known as Surface Mount Devices (SMDs) are mounted directly to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). These SMD components are slowly taking over the old method of through-hole devices, where wire leads on the component have to be pushed through holes on the PCB. Both SMD and through-hole components are generally found on the same board, allowing components not suited for surface mounting, such as transformers and heat-sinked power semiconductor devices, may also be placed on the board.
SMT components may or may not have wire leads, and are usually very small. The size of these components makes them nearly impossible to label, thus their values and the components themselves are easy to lose track of.
Smart Tweezers are the innovative solution to these problems. Easily held and operated with one hand, the lightweight device quickly evaluates all passive types of SMT components, such as Inductors, Resistors and Capacitors.
The LCR-meter fitted in Smart Tweezers is capable of automatically determining the type of component, and selects the proper range and test signal for the most accurate results. Smart Tweezers then displays the component type, test conditions and measurement results on it LCD screen.

Smart Tweezers is best described as an LCR-meter combined with a pair of tweezer tips, with the tines acting as a probe. It was designed for production line component evaluation, on-board impedance testing, and SMD components sorting. It is suitable for identifying SMDs, with an automatic recognition of measurement mode (L,C or R) function.
Designed to be efficient and cost-effective while testing, sorting and evaluating, Smart Tweezers features fully automatic LCR-measurements, including fully automatic recognition of measurement modes (L,C and R) and automatic selection of the best range of measurement.
This allows the user to focus exclusively on the component under evaluation.
Smart Tweezers LCD screen generally shows 5 digits, is divided into 3 main sections. The primary section, the largest, shows the main impedance reading. The secondary display, above the primary, shows the present reading of additional parameters such as parasitic resistance and measurement. (IE: ESR value is displayed in secondary display, while the capacitor value is shown in the primary display.) A bar graph along the bottom of the screen provides an analog view of the present measurement.
Also a diode and continuity tester, Smart Tweezers has an eternal beeper that sounds when a reading is below threshold or an open circuit is present.
