David Saetre will discuss Omnigender and the Church, September 25
Northland College Chaplain and Associate Professor of Humanities David Saetre will discuss Omnigender and the Church.
David Saetre will present "Omnigender and the Church: Identity, Religion and Sexuality in American Religion Today" at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday Saturday 25, on the third 3rd floor of the Washburn Cultural Center, 1 E Bayfield Street in downtown Washburn, WI.
The event, sponsored by PFLAG Washburn, is free and open to the public. No tickets are needed.
David Saetre will discuss one of the more profound insights of modern sociology addresses the way societies and cultures "construct reality". It turns out that many of the ideas we take for granted, and assume in every-day life, are relative to different times and places. That applies even to our ideas of sex and gender.
The discussion is to examine the social constructions of sex and gender, the ways those ideas inform identity formation and a sense of personhood, and the contributions of religion to the ideas of personhood and nature relevant to identify and acceptance.
He does recognize that this is a difficult topic for many, and potentially controversial. The discussion is meant to open up a larger conversation about sexuality and sexual identity, gender and gender-role assignment, and our deepest beliefs about what it means to be human in the world. He doesn"t pretend to have many answers at all, but hopes to bring openness to the deep questions that reside in the hearts, minds and souls of those who wish to live more authentically and lovingly in an oft-broken world.
