An electro-mechanical device, the mirror galvanometer measures small electrical currents and deflects light on a mirror that moves, essentially acting as a long, mass less pointer. Its main use was for scientific instruments before more reliable electronic amplifiers were created.
Today mirror galvanometers are primarily used to reflect and move laser light. Called a laser galvanometer scanner, or simply a galvo scanner, these devices also have a mirror. But, instead of wide spectrum light, the mirror reflects laser light. A galvo scanner can operate in one dimension as with a laser printer, in two dimensions, as with a laser light show, or in three dimensions, as with 3D printing.
The galvo scanner motion is normally controlled by a rotary encoder, controlling electronics and software. A galvo scanner can operate in two dimensions by rotating one mirror in two axes but the process is slow. Faster scanning in two dimensions occurs when the laser is reflected onto two mirrors--each driven by a galvo or electric motor.
