Cyber safety speaker Justin DoBosh, will share his own personal encounter with an online predator at the University of Tampa's Cyber Safety Seminar on April 13th; in order to help educate the local Tampa community about the dangers that exist online. Justin, age 19, is able to communicate the dangers of cyberspace in a way that engages both teens and adults. At the age of 15, Justin was victimized by an online predator. He turned this devastating experience into a personal commitment to help others avoid this fate, or worse.
With advances in technology, and the ever-expanding use of social media in the daily lives of our youth, the likelihood of students encountering a cyber threat has risen dramatically. Justin emphasizes that, while individual efforts to reduce the threat are important; only through a community-wide effort of communicating, coordinating and cooperating in cyber safety practices, can we protect our children/students from the cyber threats of today and tomorrow. As Henry Clinton says, "it takes a village..."
Following his encounter, Justin received cyber safety training from both state and federal law enforcement authorities; and he participated in a government pilot program "S2S", communicating on a peer level with students. To date, Justin has told story to over 50,000 people; sharing useful information on the topics of cyber-bullying, sexting, social networking safety and how to deal with online predators.
