Los Angeles, CA (PressExposure) February 18, 2012 -- Seven years ago, Durek Verrett was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. His heart stopped beating and he flat-lined. One doctor pronounced him dead, but another refused to give up and tried once more to resuscitate him. It was a success. For months afterwards, however, Durek remained in a medically induced coma. Even when he awoke, he was unable to walk for over a year. Emerging from the brink of death with a renewed perspective on life is a common initiation into life as a Shaman. Upon his recovery, and with incredible determination and drive he chose one focus, to make his life a work of service, Durek rededicated his life to the service and healing of others. Web-browse 'Shaman Durek' and you'll see he has been true to his commitment.
After years of enduring agonizing hemodialysis treatments three times/week while waiting for a kidney donor, this past September, Shaman Durek suffered another life-threatening emergency. He had a massive aneurysm in his dialysis graft that resulted in ambulatory emergency surgery and a 22-day stay in the hospital. He then had another surgery in November that didn't heal properly leading to another unplanned surgery in January to make a new graft and has since been in recovery and unable to work since September 2011. While we are beyond grateful that Durek again recovered, we have had to spend monies put away for his transplant expenses to get us through this time. But there is great news.
Angelina Verrett, Durek's sister, is donating a kidney to him. In order for us to schedule Durek's and Angelina's joint surgery at UCLA, we must first be able to provide for their post-operative and healing expenses. As his partner in life and in the business, I will be taking time off to care for them full-time. Durek will be quarantined while seeing doctors at UCLA several days a week for months until his new kidney replaces his need for dialysis. Angelina will live with us while her body adapts to functioning with a single kidney. This leaves us without a working member in our household for quite some time with massive surgical and recovery expenses to attend to
So, with immense gratitude, we humbly reach out to the people of the world for a donation to support this campaign. If you desire to keep a person like this alive, who is dedicated to a life of service and has been on this path since the age of 12, please support us in any way possible. It will make a huge difference towards Shaman Durek's dream of a truly full recovery as well as our ability to restart our lives.
