Long Beach, CA (PressExposure) February 05, 2013 -- Paula J. Laird, a singer and songwriter with her hands in several art forms and her mind busily considering myriad branches of dreams, has released her newest work, a single entitled, "Cinderella." The single is a pop song with a strong bass line and melodic, crystalline synth chords played behind Laird's own strong vocal melodies. It boasts a proud, confident attitude, an optimistic and fun eighties-era tone (the likes of which has been gaining more and more popularity in the last two or three years), and a measure of lyrical perspective and intelligence that is not often found in contemporary pop.
Laird's introspective nature is at least partially the source of this humanistic poetry. She writes, "You can find all kinds of things to springboard your imagination in all kinds of areas. Sometimes it's only seeing someone with a blank stare and wondering why they're looking out the coffee shop window with zero expression on their face, and concluding what they might be thinking about. Are they overwhelmed with what all they have to do that day? Or is it a heartbreaking, tragic story that is leaving them numb?"
This is at the heart and soul of "Cinderella's" subject matter. It's an examination of the human condition, the state of not being 'the other person,' the unalterable position we all hold that keeps us from knowing what - or more importantly, who - is on the inside looking out, or vice versa.
Laird, who relates that she got addicted to songwriting at the tender age of five, describes the concept as "the realism and perception of someone whom you may think has it easy in their life - from a distance, of course - when really, their life might be a total nightmare." The presumption of someone else's personal Utopia often plays a role in the casual cruelty humans inflict upon one another, but as Laird points out, life is never as simple as a single paragraph, let alone a solitary line. "I guess you can say everyone really does have a story," she writes. "People and stories are as original as their struggles and triumphs... It all adds up and makes us who we are."
Paula J. Laird hopes to release her "Dream Come True" album in the respectively near future. Her single, "Cinderella," is available online everywhere beginning early February, 2013.
